Could anyone explain the end of Edgar Allan Poe's "The ignation" to me?

I feel kind of stupid, especially because of the last line when he says "...and a consciousness of the entire and terrible truth flashed suddenly over my soul." This is fun reading, not school, so I don't need an elaborate answer or anything, I just want to understand.
