Explain the relationship among DNA, genes, alleles, and chromosomes?

Chromosomes are made of tightly wound DNA. Chromosomes are only visible during cell division, when the DNA has condensed. Genes are areas on the chromosomes responsible for a certain trait. An allele is the name given to a specific form of a gene. This is a rather simplistic answer but I hope it helps.
