Improper shutdown?

My brother and I are sharing a computer. There are times that the system runs okay but most of the times its slow thus my brother always ended up in shutting it down "improperly" and I know that's not good for the computer, but he always denies it! I just want to know if there's a way to check whether the computer has been properly shutdown or not? Thank you.
