What do i need to hook up my record player turn table to make sound?

i have a 70's-80-'s turntable and i wnat to hook it up to make sound come out of it. ive seen others hooked up but i dont know what they use. from what ive seen the turntable sits on a larger box, im uming this is a reciever. if it isnt some correct me. then from the reciever the speakers are plugged into that. right?
